• Greetings and namaste to youthern.com and I am very pleased you came to stop by.

I go by the name of Susan. This is the small space on the web where I babble about useless things.

    Feel free to enjoy/hate/be surprised.

Introduction
My name is Susan Christian and I own this small little website called youthern.com. My name means ‘lily’ and it is also found in the Bible, with reference to two women, the most famous in the Book of Daniel.

What I do like:

  • God. I was saved on July 14, 2000 at a Vacation Bible School and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Recently, on June 1, 2008, I was baptized. I love to hang out with my church’s youth group and I love even more to read the Bible. It really is an amazing book.
  • Reading. Long epic books with twists and a mix of epic adventures, with in-depth characters and lots of action, suspense, and mystery. For me, such books are even more majestic than movies.
  • Writing. This one is a little iffy for me. I used to be able to write on a whim, very nice stories/pieces of literature. But now, I have to be really inspired to actually write a story worth reading. Either way, I love to blog about my life and other things that interest me (not to say that my life doesn’t interest me!)
  • Food. I am a big lover of food, especially those of different ethnicities. Being Indian, I love the traditional favorites (falooda, tandoori chicken, etc.) but I love food from different countries as well. I try to take every opportunity to taste something new. I especially enjoy eating Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian (especially South Indian and Mughlai).
  • Music. Again, this one is a little iffy. I can play the piano and the oboe. I have never been a “music junkie” with an “iPod in my ears 24/7,” but rather, someone who enjoys a good, catchy beat and is a fan of a few, select artists. Among these, I love to listen to A. R. Rehman, AIR, Atmosphere, Björk, Bloc Party, Boards of Canada, Brand New, Broken Social Scene, Corinne Bailey Rae, CSS, Daft Punk, Damien Rice, DIGITALSIM, Editors, Franz Ferdinand, Hillsong United, Idiot Pilot, Jay Chou, Jeff Buckley, Josh Groban, Klaxons, La Caution, Lily Allen, M.I.A., McFly, Michael Bublé, múm, Portugal. The Man, Sadahnmo, Santogold, Sigur Rós, Sodagreen, The Academy Is…, The Fratellis, The Radio Dept., Tycho, Uffie, Yael Naim, and Yelle. And no, I do not have a Last.fm page for you to see what I scrobble. (Or rather, I used to, but I don’t use it anymore.)
  • Bollywood Movies. I am an absolute lover. Indian cinema is the best in its kind and I love watching adventure, romance, historical, mystery, horror, you name it. I don’t like American movies much. I haven’t watched “The Dark Knight” (*GASP!* HOW COULD YOU?!) and I’m not into chick flicks. Check my page on Bollywood movies for more information. (Coming soon!)
  • Learning. This is a stupid thing to write, but it’s true. Whether it’s learning new languages or about a country, I love to learn. That is why school is enjoyable for me. *insert cheesy smile*

What I don’t like:

  • Cultural Intolerance. This tops my list. I absolutely hate it when someone is ignored/turned down/looked down upon JUST because of race. In this vague category, the number one thing I dislike is when people don’t like the “food.” This has happened to my so many times. I offer some Indian food, and instead of politely saying, “No thank you, I’m full,” they will say, “No thanks…haha,” and stare at the food like a demon monster had just concocted it. Then, seconds later, they tell their friends, “Ew what was that? Did it even taste good? Yuck!” It weird how one looks down upon this food and a billion people in India and around the world enjoy it. Have some manners.
  • Useless conversation. I hate “small talk” and I much prefer genuine spoken word than anything else.
  • Recitals. Not necessarily just of the musical sort. I just hate “performing.” However, I love to talk in front of others and that includes speeches as well.
  • “Shh-ing.” People people press their index fingers to their lips and loudly say, “Shhh!” It just seems very rude.
  • “Said.” When people use the word “said” before a noun in conversation. For example, “I went to the store and a certain man was buying tomatoes. Said person was dressed tacky.” It just gets on my nerves.
  • Bad grammar/spelling. Huge pet-peeve! I can’t stand an email or letter full of bad spelling. It ruins the given emotional intention and it sounds like a kindergartner trying to speak.
  • Bad Poetry. This speaks for itself, really. Usually, it is written by some angsty teen who has issues and uses bad grammar and spelling (see above) because they don’t know any better. It doesn’t help that they interject “intelligent sounding” words in that mish-mash.
