Piano Recital

Well, it finally came. I’ve been looking forward to it seriously dreading it for the past few months. Always, always, always there are those prized few kids who are a few ages ahead of me and take the show away. They are very lucky because:

  • They go to the church’s school (the recital is held at my church) and therefore have access to play on it as much as possible.
  • I have a keyboard, not a piano. And those who know the difference, playing on a keyboard is much different from playing on a piano.
  • I have only been playing for three years. Less than that.

However, my piano teacher has faith in me and in the line-up (the closer you are to the end of the recital, the better you are) and she had made me go 8th out of 11th. I finally sat in first row with the prodigies! :)

I am quitting piano lessons after this recital. I believe with the vast knowledge I’ve already learned, I can start teaching myself!

Basically, the little kids who are like 6-8 get up all nervous and shaking and sit by the piano and bang out tiny tunes. Then progressively, the next kids are moderately good, playing good songs but often do not have their music memorized. The best students play last, and they usually have their music memorized and play with almost perfection. I had all my three songs memorized! (I can’t say it was perfect…I messed up once, only one note, during my difficult song and improvised. At least no one really noticed!)

Any of you play instruments? How do you performances usually go?

Hey, Susan. Just here to say that I play the piano, and I’ve been playing it for about six years, considering my parents both have Master Degrees in Performing Arts (which is basically musical stuff). They wanted me to get started playing early and considering the fact that my mom teaches me makes the whole learning experience easier. Can’t say that I’m not a prodigy myself, though. About how the performances and recitals I’ve been through…I have only been to two recitals that my mom hosted at my church. They are all usually tense and scary, though after the pieces you have played, it’s easier to relax and enjoy the rest. Unless your playing some challenging Bethoven or deft Bach pieces, you shouldn’t feel too scared, but that’s just my opinion. I’ve also two things to comment on:

You aren’t on your own, messing up a note and all. I always miss a note sometimes. But we’re all human.
About getting used to keyboards…I have been playing on a nice grand piano. You usually have to press down on a key with an acceptable amount of force. But when I came over to your house to play with your brother, I play on that keyboard of yours. Man! That thing takes no time at all to press down a key. Pretty easy to mess up on and get used to after playing the piano for a while, huh?

Well, it’s best I go now. ‘Tis a shame you will (or already have) quit piano lessons. Though knowing how smart you are, I do guess you could set standards and teach yourself. I will reply later.

Sincerely,

Some Kid
